About Us - Hobart City Band Inc.
Hobart City Band Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation in Tasmania, Australia, offering members of the community the opportunity to play in ensembles catering for a range of musical tastes and abilities.
Over 100 members
Hobart City Band Inc. has over 100 members, including people relatively new to music through to highly-experienced, professionally-qualified musicians. Ages range from 12 years to over 60, with the majority being under 30.
Membership is open to anyone with basic playing proficiency in relevant instruments. See Join Us.
Five ensembles
There are five ensembles under the Hobart City Band banner:
Each ensemble is led by a specialist conductor. Many members play in more than one ensemble.
From practice to performance
The ensembles practice regularly in preparation for concerts (held in venues such as the Town Hall, City Hall, St. David's Cathedral, Conservatorium of Music, Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre), performance at charity and community events and entry into Tasmanian and Australian National Band Championships.

In 2009 Hobart City Band Inc. released its first CD, Extreme Makeover, featuring the Brass Band and the Wind Symphony. Details.
Competition success
A major emphasis of the Wind Symphony (formerly called the Concert Band), Youth Winds (formerly the Junior Concert Band), the Brass Band and Junior Brass Band is preparing for annual entry into the Tasmanian Bands League State Band Championships.
Two of Hobart City Band's ensembles hold 2009 Tasmanian titles: The Wind Symphony is the 2009 Tasmanian Open A-Grade Concert Champion and the Junior Brass is the Tasmanian Junior B-Grade Brass Champion. Competing for the first time in A-Grade, the Brass Band was runner-up in the 2009 Tasmanian Open A-Grade Brass Championship. The Junior Concert Band was runner-up in the 2009 Tasmanian Junior A-Grade Concert Championship.
Hobart City Band Inc. has also had success in the Australian National Band Championships. The Hobart City Wind Symphony has been National Open A-Grade Concert Champion for two consecutive years (2009 and 2010) and the Hobart City Brass Band was the 2007 and 2009 National Open B-Grade Brass Champion. The Junior Brass Band is the 2010 National Junior B-Grade Brass Champion.
Management
Hobart City Band Inc. is run by the Executive Committee, elected annually at the Annual General Meeting by Hobart City Band Inc. members.
All Committtee Members participate in a voluntary capacity. Specialist conductors are employed.
The Patron of Hobart City Band Inc. is the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Rob Valentine.
Hobart City Band Inc. is financed by annual membership fees, fund-raising, ensemble-hiring fees, occasional community grants, prizes and donations.
