The Hobart City Brass Band was restarted in 2003 after an eleven year break. It has approximately 30 members, ranging in age from mid to late teens through to retirement age, with the average age being under twenty.
The Band plays a variety of styles of music, including traditional brass band and concert music, jazz and light-hearted music, marches and competition music.
The Band’s programme of events includes concerts and gigs, street marches (such as the Anzac Day Parade), fanfares, concert programmes for afternoon and evening events and performing at fêtes and fairs.
The Band also has smaller ensembles, soloists and fanfare brass.
The Band competes in Tasmanian and Australian National Band Championships. The Band is the 2011 Tasmanian A-Grade Brass Champion. The Band was the National Open B-Grade Champion in both 2007 and 2009 and came ninth in the National A-Grade Brass Championships in 2010 and eighth in 2011. See Competition Results.
In 2009 Hobart City Band Inc. released "Extreme Makeover", a CD featuring both the Hobart City Brass Band and the Hobart City Wind Symphony. Details.
Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 9:30pm at Ogilvie High School.
The Conductor of the Brass Band is Simon Cawthorn. Simon is currently on leave and for the latter part of 2011 and early 2012 the Conductor is Derek Grice (see News,19/6/2011)
