Meet Hobart City Band Inc
About Us
Music for the people
Hobart City Band Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation based in Tasmania, Australia, offering members of the community the opportunity to play in ensembles catering for a range of musical tastes and abilities.
Hobart City Band Inc. has over 90 members, including people relatively new to music through to highly-experienced, professionally-qualified musicians. Ages range from 12 years to over 60, with the majority being under 30. There are four ensembles under the Hobart City Band banner, including Wind Symphony, Swing Band, Youth Winds, and Junior Brass.
Each ensemble is led by a specialist conductor and attended by a group of passionate and committed musicians, with many of our members playing in more than one ensemble. Membership is open to anyone with basic playing proficiency in relevant instruments. For more information, read Join Us.
From Practice to Performance
The Hobart City Bands practice regularly in preparation for concerts held in venues such as the Town Hall, City Hall, St. David’s Cathedral, Conservatorium of Music Recital Hall and Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre.
In addition, our ensembles regularly compete in Tasmanian State and Australian National Band Championships and local eisteddfods. Many people have become familiar with our bands through performances at charity and community events. The Hobart City Band Gala Performance is an annual, winter event featuring each of the ensembles. Some of the ensembles also play at private functions.
In 2009 Hobart City Band Inc. released its first CD, Extreme Makeover, featuring the Brass Band and the Wind Symphony. A major emphasis of the Wind Symphony (formerly called the Concert Band), Youth Winds (formerly the Junior Concert Band), the Brass Band and Junior Brass Band is preparing for annual entry into the Tasmanian Bands’ League State Band Championships.
