Our Heritage

A Little About Us

The Hobart City Youth Winds (formerly the Junior Concert Band) was formed in 2004. It was initially based on the Clarence High School Concert Band (Conductor Lyall McDermott), and now draws its members from schools throughout southern Tasmania.

Australia's next generation

The Hobart City Youth Winds is an accomplished wind band that competes in both Tasmanian and Australian National Championships. This ensemble of talented youth is recognized for its high level of musicality, outstanding performances, and numerous awards and accolades. Led by conductor and flautist Claire Reade, Youth Winds won the 2011 Australian National Junior B-Grade Concert Championship, and also won the 2011 Tasmanian Junior B-Grade Concert Championship, which is a testament to the band’s exceptional talent and dedication.

The Youth Winds has a diverse and exciting repertoire, which includes a wide range of musical styles, from classical to contemporary. The band performs at a variety of events, including concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, and always delivers a memorable and engaging performance. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Hobart City High School. Youth Winds is conducted by Claire Reade.

We have ensembles suitable for all ages, musical interests, and skill levels, with our member’s ages ranging from 12 years to over 60. We are always ready to welcome new members to our musical family.

Hobart City Band Inc. is run by the Executive Committee, elected annually at the Annual General Meeting by Hobart City Band Inc. members. All Committtee Members participate in a voluntary capacity. Specialist conductors are employed. We are financed by annual membership fees, fund-raising, ensemble-hiring fees, occasional community grants, prizes and donations.
